Followed your advice and installed kernel
2.6.35-020635rc1-generic
Brightness control is working now, as is battery indicator applet.
Graphics have got worst, though (flickering). Mi laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A505-SP6023M. Also my wireless stop working (it was intermittent before)

the nouveau stuff isnt in the ubuntu mainline kernel yet.
